teaspotgreenroastedmintThe Tea Spot's Green Roasted Mint consists of peppermint leaves blended with a roasted Hojicha green, which has a wonderful toasted scent and taste and a really mild flavor. The scent of the dry leaf is delightful - strongly minty married to a nice, toasty scent. Nice and nose tingling.

The mint definitely comes through in the tea - it's very forward in the tasting, but the Hojicha holds its own, more so than I would have expected. The mint is a really fresh and bracing one, with a clean finish and a pert way of kissing the base of the nasal passsages. The hojicha balances the brightening, clarifying zip of the mint with a nice mellow fullness and a fine toasty grain taste that is really nice.

I enjoyed my cup this morning after my breakfast tea, and find it makes a great mid morning tea, light on caffeine, pleasantly minty, and good for maintaining alertness without going bonkers from an overabundance of caffeine. This will be good after dinner, too, or in the evening.

Taste wise, I keep feeling like this is surely a more minty tea than a green. But then I take another sip and am again surprised by the fine balance between the two flavors. The mint is forward, sure, but the Hojicha is not only present, but really fulls things up. The second infusion is weaker and more to the toasty side, but pretty pleasant and very sippable, with much less mintiness.

Quite a nice combo. I think the toastiness of the Hojicha is really what makes this tea. Another green, despite their distinct flavor profile, would be overwhelmed by mints somewhat upstaging taste tendencies, but the toastiness circumvents this. This would make a nice standard tea for the cupboard, as it will appeal to you at many hours of the day and would be excellent to serve to guests, crossing a spectrum of taste preferences and appealing even to people who might not usually like tea or have a lot of experience with tea.
