golden-moon-irish-breakfast.jpgI have a particular fondness for Irish Breakfast blends as one of them was the tea that first opened my eyes to the fact that not all black teas are created equal. As the Golden Moon website promises, my sample included a mix of beautiful golden tips and deep black leaves. The aroma of the dry leaves is milder than that of some Irish Breakfast blends I have tried, but is quite inviting. After brewing for 4 minutes the tea is a deep amber color and the aroma has intensified, reminding me of honey.

I usually enjoy adding a bit of sugar and cream to black teas, but am finding that the true test of a black tea in my eyes at least, is if it is smooth and delicious all on its own. So my first cup of this one is sampled free of any additions. My first sips of this tea quickly turn to what could probably be described as unladylike gulps! Not only is this tea strong enough to get all the senses going in the morning, it is smooth and sweet, and lacks any bitterness, making it incredibly easy to drink. It also exhibits the depth of maltiness that is one of the main reasons I love Irish Breakfast blends in the first place.

To make a fair comparison, I decided that I should try this one with cream and sugar as is my norm. I have to admit that this was not an easy decision for me as my sample is limited and this is one of the few black teas that I can honestly say I LOVE strictly on its own. I am glad though that I did try it both ways though as it is just as delicious and a bit more rich and extravagant with the additions. I would highly recommend this tea to both black tea purists as well as those who prefer to make their own additions. It is a blend that that lends itself equally to that first brisk morning cup to get you going and a more relaxed afternoon cup to savor. The only thing keeping it from rating a perfect 10 in my mind is the price and the fact that it doesn’t really stand up to more than one infusion.
