Thumbs up!"The sweetness that the chocolate left in my mouth did complement the tea nicely, but it was still hard to coax any strong chocolate flavor out of the tea."

chocolattematchamint.jpgKalahari Cafe's Matcha Mint tea is one of many in the Artisan ChocoLatte collection. I have previously reviewed two rooibos blends in this collection, both of which I really enjoyed. Matcha Mint is a mix of sencha and matcha green teas with dark roasted cacao, peppermint, and chocolate flavor. All of the ingredients are organic and the tea comes packaged in individually-wrapped tea bags made of unbleached Manila hemp and unbleached wood pulp. This tea has a strong minty smell to it, and as the aroma indicates, the mint is the overwhelming flavor. The mint was crisp and clean and just about covered up the green tea flavor. I really couldn't really taste much of the green tea, and could easily have been fooled into thinking that the tea base for this was strictly peppermint. I also found the chocolate flavor to be overpowered by the mint, however, and wish that I could have tasted the chocolate flavor a bit more. As I have previously enhanced my enjoyment of matcha tea by having a small piece of chocolate before drinking the tea, I did the same, hoping that this would not only enhance the tea overall, but also make the tea's chocolate flavors more apparent. The sweetness that the chocolate left in my mouth did complement the tea nicely, but it was still hard to coax any strong chocolate flavor out of the tea. I also noticed that after the effects of eating the chocolate had worn off, the tea needed some sugar to get it to the perfect sweetness level. Overall, this wasn't a phenomenal brew, but it was still enjoyable. This tea appears to be made of high-quality ingredients and offers a smooth minty flavor. While I would recommend other teas in the ChocoLatte collection before this one, I wouldn't outright reject this one altogether, as it was still pretty tasty as long as one knows to expect a much more subtle chocolate flavor in this blend.

Nice to know that the mint is overdone with this tea. The name is wonderful-sounding as “Chocolatte” sounds just luscious and Matcha sounds creamy and delish. But if it’s unbalanced in favor of the mint, it doesn’t hold up to its name. I won’t be buying this tea even though it was tempting before I read the review. I’m not that fond of mint.
