golden-moon-sugar-caramel-o.jpgI was super excited to receive this sample of Golden Moon's Sugar Caramel Oolong. I had come across their Golden Moon's Coconut Pouchong previously, and had noticed that tea had won Best Tea at the 2007 World Tea Expo. While contemplating placing an order for that Coconut Pouchong, I had come across this Sugar Caramel Oolong, and had found it intriguing. I am always on the hunt for a good oolong.

Golden Moon's website describes this as: Our Sugar Caramel Oolong tea uses premium quality green oolong leaves, tightly rolled and carefully hand-crafted and infused with sweet essences of rich caramel and burnt sugar.

The website states that this is good for multiple infusions. The aroma of the sample was promising and I prepared this with anticipation. The look and taste of the oolong definately suggests that it is a Formosa oolong as there is that prevalent nutty taste to it that I rather like. There is a definite sweetness and it tastes as though it comes with sugar added. However, I am not really picking up on an actual caramel taste, which is what would make this stand apart for me. Further, I find the sweetness a little artificial tasting.

I actually keep a Formosa oolong in my tea cabinet and it stays in regular rotation. I often add a caramel rooibos to it and the combination makes a wonderful dessert tea--kinda a caramel nut taste. As an experiment, and because I long for more caramel taste, I decided to make the second infusion and simultaneously make up a small batch of caramel rooibos. I did make them in separate tea makers as I wanted to see how this stood up on the second infusion by itself and to just add the caramel rooibos to the cup about halfway through.

The second infusion's cup is better than the first as the flavor is a little bit more delicate and the edge is taken off that sweetness. Yes, I, the tsp of sugar queen, said that! However, about halfway through this cup I added the caramel rooibos brew to it and that made it even better.

Bottom line, Golden Moon's idea behind the product is a great one, but falls a little short in terms of a good caramel flavor.
