teaggojiberryWith a name that seems to have almost as many letters as the company has varieties of tea, the German firm TeaGschwendner (pronounced TEA-gesh-VEND-ner) sells more than 300 varieties of tea via the internet and in over 145 tea shops located in seven countries on four continents. Eleven of their teas were winners at the 2009 World Tea Championship!

Consistent with this “maximulist” trend, Goji Berry has no shortage of ingredients. It contains goji-berries, rose hip pieces, hibiscus blossoms, currants, lemongrass, elderberries, black currant, flavor, sunflower and cornflower blossoms. These attractive components make this the best looking tea around. The mixture looks like a coarsely ground Christmas tree. While fun to look at, regrettably this eclectic combination does not result in a great tasting drink.

For my first attempt, I steeped two teaspoons of tea in eight ounces of water for ten minutes. This produced a reddish-brown liquor with the potent smell and taste of lemongrass. It appeared as though it were the only ingredient present. I reduced the time to five minutes. Still, the hibiscus/lemongrass flavors reigned - resulting in a rather singular flavor and lacking any sense of subtlety or complexity. This is a fun tea to look at, but not drink.
