teasetclemonhoneybushWhen I read about Beth Johnston and how she began her Florida-based tea company, I couldn’t help but like her. Her passion for tea radiates from her biography and she appears to be an excellent learner. Finally, she runs Teas Etc., the company that makes one of my favorite tisanes - Mango Nut. However, as much as I desired and tried, I could not make myself like Lemon Honeybush.

This tisane consists of organic honeybush, organic lemon grass and organic lemon myrtle. One of my favorite combinations is lemon and honey so the name alone predisposed me toward liking this tisane. But lemon and honey blend together to create a combined sweet/sour taste. That is not what I experienced with Lemon Honeybush where the two flavors seem divided, separate and in competition with each other. Drinking this beverage was anything but peaceful and tasted like discord and cacophony unevenly stirred into a cup of hot water. Even as it cooled, the flavor did not improve.

For my first attempt, I steeped one teaspoon of tisane in eight ounces of water for 41/2 minutes. I had to force myself to drink as much as I could. In my second try I increased the tea to two teaspoons, the time to five minutes and added honey. I think this greatly improved the taste, but it still had a very flat taste that reminded me of Orange Pekoe. Perhaps honeybush and lemon flavor just don’t get along.
