lepalaisdetrestoffeLe Palais des Thes has a handful of shops (21, to be exact) peppered throughout the globe - from France to Japan to Slovenia, amongst others. Their tea is on offer, and comes my way, from the inestimable American Tea Room as well.

On my current quest to find delicious caramel or toffee flavored teas (ones that are not dusty and leave your throat scratchy and itchy), this tea came across my path (thanks, David!). The aroma of the dried leaf is sublime and warming - rich cocoa and subtle coffee notes pervade a strong black tea presence. The leaves are of even quality, mid-sized broken.

The recommended steep time for this tea is 5 minutes, with which I cannot argue. Playing with slightly longer and shorter times revealed less satisfactory offerings. In the cup, the aroma shifts to a more vanilla-oriented one, while keeping the cocoa notes at bay. On the palette, the flavor is very nice indeed. A natural sweetness from the vanilla comes through boldly, and the toffee effect comes through nicely. This is perfect morning tea, a bold black to perk up your senses while remaining extremely comforting and familiar, even on first sip. What it lacks in wow-factor or pizzazz, it more than makes up for in straight-up delicious flavor, a liquid form of comfort food. It also serves as an ideal afternoon pick-me-up right around 16:00.

This tea is exceptionally priced at the source -- significantly lower than most other quality loose leaf on the market. For its overall drinkability, delicious flavor, and value for your dollar, this makes a perfect staple in your tea cupboard.
