boulderkazeAccording to their website,, "Slightly mild taste and a little easier to brew when compared to our Kabuse Sencha. Same nutritional value and very high caffeine content as Kabuse, just not quite intense and less of a tendency to become bitter when it's brewed too hot or too long. Zake Sencha can also be brewed 3 times."

I really enjoyed this tea. It is rare to find a good green tea and it's especially hard to find a green tea who's flavor bucks the trend of the American standard of "green tea" flavor. The Boulder Kaze Sencha does both. I brewed it at 175F for 1 minutes (steep 1), then 195F for 1 minute (steep 2); a slight variation on recommended brewing.

Steep 1 - The color is a pale green. The smell is deliciously unique: an amalgamation of cooked leaf vegetables (kale, spinach) and fresh cut green grass. The taste has notes of root vegetable (specifically rutabaga), a light smokiness. The best thing I can akin it to is a good chicken stock: it is almost meaty, rich, and savory. A very, very fine brew.

Steep 2 - The color remains the pale green as before. The smell has lessened to the smell of slow cooked collard greens. The flavor has become less nuanced but still good, strong cooked vegetables are still there along with a healthy dose of appealing mouth pucker. The first was better, but this does stand up to multiple brews.

This is an excellent tea. It is quite unique in its own way and probably would be an acquired taste (it's pretty strongly vegetal) but if you like it it is a wonderful tea to have on hand.
