mightyleafgingertwistI was feeling a bit under the weather as I went through my stack of samples, trying to decide which tea to review next. Mighty Leaf's Ginger Twist bagged tisane seemed like an easy choice, and a good candidate for a pick-me-up.

This tisane is made up of lemongrass, mint, lemon, orange, licorice, apple, papaya, ginger, ginseng, and natural flavors, all sewn up in a large, silky, 100% biodegradable teabag. The contents were a mix of small dark and light ingredients in various shapes and colors. I could smell the mint, lemongrass, ginger, and ginseng quite distinctly, all quite fresh and pleasant.

Following the recommended directions, I steeped the bag in one cup of 208F water for five of the recommended five to seven minutes. Although the contents of the bag swelled considerably to look a lot like short grass clippings, there was plenty of room for them to stretch out in, thanks to the oversized bag. The light golden yellow liquor had a decidedly invigorating mint/ginger/ginseng aroma. The taste proved to be a very good balance of the various elements, as well. Initially it was quite sweet, somewhat fruity, with lots of mint, liquorice, and mellow ginseng, then a smooth ginger and lemon note surfaced with a bit of a tingle on the tongue, and finally a pleasant gingery, minty taste and scent in the finish.

Many of the ginger blend teas and tisanes I've tried have been on the harsh side, with the ginger outshouting any other flavors, just as hibiscus so often does. But Mighty Tea's Ginger Twist is very smooth and balanced, and I really like the use of the ginseng; its mellow, exotic flavor goes perfectly with the ginger and none of the flavors come on too strong. In fact, my only criticism is that it could have been a little stronger without being overpowering. Fortunately, I had a second teabag and steeped this one for seven minutes. The flavors were a little stronger, but not much.

In addition to tasting good, it settled my stomach very nicely and left me feeling a good deal better than when I'd started. And no wonder. According to the website, Ginseng (Panax ginseng) boosts energy, helps alleviate stress and improves stamina. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is high in antioxidants, aids digestion, relaxes the nervous system and aids in fighting colds and flus. And Ginger (Zingiber officinale) also enhances digestion, stimulates circulation, helps remedy respiratory conditions, fights fevers, relieves headaches, soothes aching muscles and bolsters the immune system. I'm not a great drinker of tisanes, but I think I'll be adding this one to my personal stash.
