grandgenmaichaGrand Tea's Organic Gemaicha Matcha-iri has generous amounts of both roasted brown rice and pale green matcha powder, that latter covering both rice and the long dark green tea leaves (type unspecified) with a thick dusting. The mixture has a grassy, roasted aroma.

I infused a heaping teaspoon of the tea in eight ounces of 175F water for two minutes. This created an opaque jade green liquor, due to the presence of the matcha powder, which suspends in the water rather than dissolving. The aroma was decidedly and primarily roasty. At first, flavor-wise, roasted rice was the most prevalent note. The matcha was smooth and not bitter, but not very flavorful, either, although the lack of any bitterness makes me think that it is quite fresh. The green tea flavor is rather overpowered by the rice, as well. My main impression was that the flavors were out of balance, with the rice in the driver's seat. As it cooled, the green tea flavor did come to the fore, however, light and grassy, with a sweet finish.

The flavors of the green tea and matcha were not as strong and present as I would have liked, but if you drink genmaicha matcha for the roasty aroma and taste, then this tea delivers.
