narienkeemunRecently I’ve been trying a variety of Keemun teas, mainly because my husband enjoys them.  When placing on-line orders or when stopping by our local teashop, we always check the selection of Keemun tea.  I’ve found that there can be a great range in flavor from one Keemun to another.  Some are strong, yet pleasantly easy to drink with just the right hint of smoke.  Others can be challenging for someone who isn’t a fan of heavy tobacco or smoke flavor.  That leads me to my sample, Keemun Imperial, an offering from Narien Teas.

The dry leaf consists of small, wiry black leaves with a strong tobacco scent.  To prepare my cup I used one teaspoon in boiling water with a three-minute steep.  The scent of the steeped tea is rich and smoky.  For my first cup, I tried the tea without any additions.  The tea was very strong with a heavy smokiness that was a bit too much for my taste buds.  I decided to add cream and agave and try it again.  The tea handled the additions well and the smoke flavor was more subdued, although still present.  After a few more sips, I started detecting light floral notes underneath the smokiness.

Overall if you enjoy a smoky cup, you may really enjoy this as a nice breakfast option.  It has a good amount of body and would definitely do the trick as a wake-up brew.  For me, this was a nice tea but in the end the smoky taste and smell was just a little too much.
