Thumbs up!" A splash of half and half brought out the surprisingly complex flavors of spice, wood, tobacco, and honey sweetness. The finish was sweet and woody, with lots of mouth-drying pull that left me primed for the next sip. "

kteaslogoHailing from the teagardens of Kenya, KTeas' Irish Sunrise is a CTC black tea. The very finely chopped leaves are a deep chocolate brown, with a rich, sweet, tobacco-y aroma that takes me back to my great grandmother's house in Canada, and a freshly opened packet of Red Rose. And Canadian Red Rose in those days was pretty darn good.

I placed a heaping teaspoon of the dry leaf in a fine mesh infuser and steeped it for four minutes in 10 oz of 208F water. The resulting liquor was a deep coppery red. The flavor was strong with plenty of astringency, but no bitterness. A splash of half and half brought out the surprisingly complex flavors of spice, wood, tobacco, and honey sweetness. The finish was sweet and woody, with lots of mouth-drying pull that left me primed for the next sip.

There's not much history or provenance for me to wax poetic over with this tea. Kenyan tea is favored for its full-bodied flavor and is used as the base for many proprietary blends from England, Ireland, and Scotland, but here we appear to have the pure article. If you want a full-bodied, flavorful black that packs a caffeine wallop and that's priced for guiltless daily indulgence, Irish Sunrise is an excellent choice and a real bargain. Quite frankly, its flavor rivals some more expensive, orthodox leaf blacks I've tried. I'll be ordering some of this myself.
