Not Great"I played it safe and was rewarded with a dark ochre liquor that had a strong aroma of wet, raw soil full of leaf mould and roots—the embodiment of "earthy." The flavor was virtually identical, with some mild astringency. Where pu'erhs should be smoothly sweet, earthy, and woody, this steeping was just earthy. "

kteaslogoKTeas' loose leaf organic pu'erh offering comes with little information on origin or age, or even process—cooked or raw. They focus rather on the traditionally-held health benefits: detoxifying, lowering cholesterol, digestive. Since age and process are crucial factors in how a pu'erh is produced, this didn't bode well.

The medium length black leaves in my sample had a distinct raw earth aroma, with some sweetness in the undertones. I steeped a heaping teaspoonful in 8 oz of 208F water for the recommended 5 minute first infusion. According to the directions, you can push it to 6 minutes, but you risk some bitterness beyond that. Second infusion: 6 min. Same earthy aroma, same flavor, but weaker.

No, I'm not impressed with this one. Pu'erh is an acquired taste because it has such an unusual and complex flavor spectrum. This one is monochromatic.

  1. Geoff Says:

Try infusing for 4 1/2 minutes in 190-200F. I got decent results from that.
