culinarygenmaichaextragreenGenmaicha was my introduction into the world of Japanese tea.  I’ve always found it to be a very comforting drink that is wonderful for relaxing after a long day.  Culinary Teas Genmaicha Extra Green with Matcha includes bright green matcha powder over vibrant green bancha and roasted brown rice.  The dry leaves have the unmistakable roasted rice scent, followed by the slightly grassy smell of the bancha.  All of the ingredients come together to create a very attractive blend.

For my first cup I steeped one heaping teaspoon in water boiled and allowed to cool for a few minutes.  Following a one-minute steep, a wonderful roasted rice scent filled the room, promising a nice toasty cup of tea.  As I poured my cup, I noticed that the liquor of this tea was vibrant green and slightly cloudy from the matcha.  I was exited to try this variation on an old favorite of mine, but was disappointed when the cup turned out to be rather weak.

I decided to try again, and for my second cup, I used one and a half teaspoons with a one-minute steep.  The distinct roasted rice scent filled the room again and the first sip left me with the feeling of warmth and comfort.  The tea is slightly sweet and perfectly toasty, although nothing really sets this particular version apart from others I have tried.  Overall, I can’t say the matcha really added much flavor or oomph to the cup, but this is still a good tea with clear and simple flavors.
