kteaslogoMate is a traditional South American drink made from the leaves and twigs of the Yerba Mate tree.  It is touted as a popular alternative to coffee and it’s easy to see why.  I’ve always found mate to be a strong drink and one that definitely keeps you focused and alert.  From the different types I’ve tried, it has always reminded me a little of tobacco.  Nothing too strong, but just a light touch, very similar to the tobacco flavor I find in many raw pu-erhs.  I had never tried a flavored mate, and this one sounded like a good mix.

I could not find a list of ingredients, but my sample appeared to have both mate and rooibos.  I didn’t notice any chocolate chips or pieces, so I assume that a chocolate flavoring has been added as well.  For my cup I followed the listed brewing instructions and used one heaping teaspoon in boiling water with a 6 minute steep.  Other web resources (devoted only to yerba mate) do not recommend using boiling water, so I also tried a cup with cooler water.  I didn’t notice a difference in taste.

After the long steep my drink could have easily passed for coffee.  The brew was so dark I was unable to see the bottom of the cup.  The scent was very chocolaty with a nice toasted quality.  Taste wise, the chocolate flavor came through strong and lingered long after each sip.  The tobacco flavor I usually associate with the drink was very faint and a pleasant nutty sweetness was more prominent.  I really enjoyed this drink and could see having it every now and again.  If you are looking to try a flavored mate and you’re fan of chocolate, this would be a wonderful place to start.
