serendipiteacolonilleLike most avid tea drinkers, my tea preferences seems to change over time, such as from season to season. However, one thing that stays fairly constant among my erratic tea-drinking preferences is that I am always game for a quality vanilla tea. And it turns out that I was in luck today, as my newest package of samples arrived and Colonille, a blend of Vietnamese black tea leaves and vanilla was the easy first choice to begin sampling. I say it was an easy choice because, despite each tea being carefully packaged to prevent loss and mingling of flavors, the instant I opened my envelope, I was greeted by the familiar scent of vanilla. The aroma was rich and satisfying. I brewed my sample using standard black tea brewing parameters: boiling water with a three minute infusion. I was impressed with how smooth and naturally sweet this tea was. The vanilla flavor was exactly to my likings and seemed to complement a natural cocoa-like sweetness of the black tea leaves. I am fairly unfamiliar with Vietnamese teas, but based on this sample of Colonille, it seems to pair quite well with the vanilla. There was a complete lack of any harshness or bitterness, making this cup entirely enjoyable. This is a sturdy (but not overly powerful) brew and for me, this tea was great on its own, without adding any milk or sugar. However, I do imagine that it would take milk and/or sugar quite nicely, making for a fantastic guilt-free dessert tea (unfortunately for me, I guzzled down my sample too quickly to test). Overall, this is a wonderfully flavored vanilla tea that is rich and sweet; I would highly recommend this to any vanilla lover. This is a fairly basic blend, and while its not exactly "elite" or "rare", it is delicious and worth having on hand to quell those sweet tooth cravings. I should also comment that at a cost of $10 for 4 ounces, this is a very reasonably priced tea.
