serendipcongobongoA tea named “Congo Bongo” just sounds fun. And indeed, this tea lives up to its name. Congo Bongo is a Nilgiri black tea flavored with coconut and mango. Based on the Serendipitea website, it appears that there are no artificial flavors used. The tea exudes a fun fruity aroma that translates nicely into a refreshing and light cup of tea. Any coconut tea that I sample is, by default, compared to my all-time favorite coconut tea, which is Zhi Tea’s Coconut Assam. I will say that Serendipitea’s Congo Bongo did not quite surpass Zhi’s Coconut Assam, but it did hold up quite well in the contest by offering a different take on coconut tea. My most favorite Coconut Assam is rich, toasty, and hearty, whereas Serendipitea’s Congo Bongo is light, tropical, and refreshing. The mango and coconut are well-blended, allowing each flavor to be distinctly detected but not allowing either flavor to dominate the cup. The Nilgiri base is ideal for this tea. Even as a hot drink, I found this tea smooth and refreshing, but I think that this tea shines most as an iced tea. This tea seems like it was destined to be served over ice in a tall glass and sipped while lounging on a veranda or swinging in a hammock. Unfortunately for me, the circumstances under which I drank this tea were very different from those ideal situations I just described, but even so, the fun and fruity flavors were enough to provide me with quite the enjoyable tea experience. If you are looking for a decently-flavored tea to fill your iced tea pitcher for these hot summer months, Serendipitea’s Congo Bongo is definitely one that you should consider.
