kteaslogo"Yerba Maté is the hot drink of choice in South America—usually enjoyed by sipping from a hollow gourd (cuia) through a filtered straw (bombihla). We don’t have the cuia or the bombihla, here, but we do offer you the chance to enjoy the invigorating maté with some sinful chocolate!" ---KTeas website.

Good Morning, everyone! I generally do most of my tea reviewing in the evening with the exception of maté blends as they are caffeinated with a similar amount of caffeine as coffee. I save these for weekend mornings when I have a few minutes before heading out the door to the gym. KTeas doesn't list the ingredients on their site for this particular blend but, to my somewhat skilled eye, it appears to contain green yerba maté, red rooibos and chocolate flavoring as I see no chocolate bits, cacao nibs, etc. The aroma coming from the dry sample indeed kind of smells like chocolate flavoring in that it lacks a little in authenticity as far as the aroma of chocolate goes.

I prepared my cup using water brought to a full boil and infused a generous scoop for close to 6 min. I also added a healthy pinch of German rock cane sugar as I know this is a blend that I will prefer sweetened. The prepared cup primarily tastes of red rooibos and green yerba mate. For those not experienced with maté, there is both green yerba maté and a roasted version. I personally prefer the roasted version in general, but have come across some amazing green yerba maté blends in recent months. The chocolate flavor is mostly present in the aftertaste and kind of lingers in your mouth for a bit after swallowing. It isn't a strong or particularly authentic chocolate flavor, which I found to be a little disappointing. To me, it tastes more like 'diet' chocolate---one that uses a sugar substitute rather than sugar. It isn't bad, but it doesn't quite satisfy the same way as the real stuff. That is the case here too. The cup is certainly drinkable, but not one that I would seek out for purchase as it is lacking in chocolatey goodness. That said, the maté worked it's magic and got both my body and mind fully alert. Yay for maté!
