Thumbs up!"I took a sip, then another and another. I loved this tea!!!! It has a lovely nutty flavor - maybe a bit like chestnuts. It also became sweeter and sweeter as it cooled! I have never tasted such a sweet tea that was not flavored to be sweet!"

Sugimoto USA's Hoji Cha sounded so unique I was excited to try it! I received my bag and was a bit surprised to find that this green tea actually looked more like pine needles or little light brown rolled tubes. Being a roasted green tea, I guess that shouldn't have surprised me, but I was entering new territory trying a roasted green tea!

I opened it and smelled. Whew... I was not real pleased with the scent. It's hard for me to describe, but it was a mix of tobacco, nuts, and dry grass.

BUT... I learned long ago, not to judge a tea only by it's smell! So I got ready to brew myself a cup. Then, suddenly I got insecure and unsure. I wanted to brew it right, so that I got the right taste. So, before brewing it, I went back to Sugimoto USA's website.

I spent over a half hour reading! What a fantastic website!!! They only offer three unique Japanese green teas, and yet the information on these teas, how they are made and how to brew them abounds!!!

I especially enjoyed their description of the Theanine and the Tannin, how each one affects the taste, and how the water temp and the brewing time affects each of these! I'm going to apply this info to all of the green teas I brew!

But I was careful and not only followed their brewing instructions for Hoji Cha, but also applied this information. I knew that I preferred a sweet green tea over a bitter one, so I slightly adjusted the water temperature down a bit from the original instructions.

I have never had a tea that I only steeped for 45 seconds!!! When I pulled out the infuser, the leaves had unfurled a bit, and the smell had become a bit nuttier. I was still a bit skeptical, though.

I took a sip, then another and another. I loved this tea!!!! It has a lovely nutty flavor - maybe a bit like chestnuts. When first brewed and still very hot, it still had a bit of the fragrance of tobacco and grass, but that quickly faded as the tea cooled. It also became sweeter and sweeter as it cooled! I have never tasted such a sweet tea that was not flavored to be sweet!

Wow! I would never have guessed I could fall so in love with such a tea, but I did! I love it! And it is so healthy, and yet it is a lovely no calorie treat!!! I'm patting myself on the back for stepping out and trying something new. I have been greatly rewarded in finding this amazing unique tea!
