Its OK"It had a good taste. A nice dark china tea flavor, and the smokiness has a very unique flavor to it. I tasted and tasted, trying to pick out what was unique about it - and I settled on a smoked pine flavor. I went back, and sure enough, my tongue had not deceived me! It is smoked over pine!!"

Mark T. Wendell: Purveyor and Importer of Fine Teas since 1904. This company is well known for their quality imports of tea, as well as offering a variety of brand teas and accessories. Their website is easy to navigate, and their descriptions are very good. They even give brewing tips and, when appropriate, they give suggestions on using cream, milk and sugar.

Hu-Kwa is a smoked Lapsang Souchong and highly valued among connoisseurs. Though I love drinking black teas, Hu-Kwa was one I was not yet familiar with so I looked forward to giving it a try.

When I received my package of tea, I liked the look of the tea. It was really pretty - dark reddish brown, and twiggy. I opened it and smelled, and the first thing to hit my nose, was a very woodsy smokey scent.

I followed their very detailed brewing instructions. My cup was a beautiful dark red tea, and I could still smell the smokiness, though it was not as strong. As suggested by the Mark T. Wendell website, I tasted it both clear and with just some cream. I never added sugar. I preferred it with the cream.

"Hu-Kwa gains its distinctive flavor and smoky tang from the pine fires over which it is dried."

It gives the tea a very distinct flavor and I can see why it is a favorite. I have had teas with a "smoke" flavor added which I never really liked. It always just leaves my mouth tasting of ashes. This tea, however, had a very natural smokey flavor.

Personally, I think I'm just not a person who cares for a smoked flavor tea. However, my daughter loves them. So I will probably be sharing this tea with her, because it just was not my favorite. But that is a very personal preference.

I am experienced enough to know that this was a delicious, quality Lapsang Souchong and the smokey flavor was savory and very unique with the pine undertone. For those who enjoy a smokey black tea, I would highly recommend this tea!
