serendipiteacolonilleThis offering from SerendipiTea is a Vietnamese black tea with vanilla. Under ingredients it says simply “vanilla” rather than vanilla beans, and between that and the lighter vanilla fragrance, I’m going to assume they used liquid vanilla or vanilla flavoring of some sort. The tea leaves are very small and almost uniformly black. I looked for but did not find any vanilla bean pieces. Dry, it has a pleasant but light vanilla aroma with little trace of the tea itself.

I brewed a level teaspoon of dry leaf in 8 oz of 208F water for five minutes. This produced a rich copper brown cup with the same light aroma as the dry, but a bit fainter. Flavor wise, the vanilla was a no-show. The black tea was smooth enough, astringent without being bitter, but lacking in complexity and finish. Little vanilla fragrance was left in my mouth when I exhaled through my nose.

This is by no means a bad tea, but not a great one, either. It’s smooth, mellow, and good for everyday sipping.
