artofteaclassicblackWhile an good oolong will always be my favorite style of tea, there are times when nothing will suffice but a good black tea. When that happens, I usually find myself reaching for my Golden Monkey but I am always looking for another black tea to add to my cabinet. So when Art of Tea’s Classic Black came up in my available samples, I jumped at the chance to try it especially as I have heard raves about their products.

Classic Black won 1st Place at the World Tea Expo in the Black Tea Category. According to their website, it is a blend of whole leaf Nilgiri tea hand blended with smooth rich Yunnan golden buds. Looking at my sample however I am not able to find any whole leaves and as far as golden buds, well I can count on one hand the number of golden leaves. Now admittedly it is possible that everything was broken and smashed together in shipping so I am keeping my mind open and waiting for that first taste. The aroma is delightful. That wonderful black tea scent unlined with a slight fruitiness.

I prepared my sample according to the instructions on the website. And I do want to give Art of Tea kudos for having such concise directions. I prefer to make my first cup according to vendor’s specifications and then play from there.

The slight fruitiness carries over into the brewed liquor. I can’t really pin it down. One sniff and I am learning towards berries, and then the next is towards apricots. Let me know if you can figure it out.

The taste is wonderful. Glad that I kept an open mind. It is very smooth with a slight dryness hitting the back and edges of the tongue. The fruitiness also carries over into the flavor but again I can’t decide on which fruit but it does contribute a natural sweetness. I can easily see why this tea took home a ribbon.

Would I stock this tea? I really think that I would especially as the price is so reasonable, only $12.00 for eight ounces. And it does really make a nice change from my golden monkey standby. Oh and if you hurry, all of their sampler sets are on sale. Unfortunately though this tea isn't part of a sampler but it is still a great way to check some interesting teas.

Vendor Alert! For a wide selection of green, black, white and oolong teas, as well as teaware and tea-related accessories, be sure to visit Art of Tea.
