chahfourseasonoolongThis organic offering from UK-based Chah Teas was grown in the Dong Ding area of Taiwan’s Nantou County, at altitudes above 450m above sea level. The name “Four Seasons” comes from the fact that this varietal produces four good growth flushes each year.

The leaves are small and rolled into small smooth nuggets. They are not especially fragrant dry, just a hint of floral and woodsy notes. I placed three teaspoons of the dry leaf in a warmed 4 oz. Yixing teapot and infused it in 175F water for 30 seconds. This produced a bright yellow liquor with a moderate level of orchid floral fragrance. The flavor was a little flat, lightly bittersweet, with a dry bittersweet finish. (Bittersweet is not a pejorative term with oolongs. It’s just a matter of degree.) Despite a somewhat lacking start, it left a respectable amount of fragrance in the mouth.

I tried a second infusion of 40 seconds, which produced a slightly darker, and much more fragrant cup. The Chah website promises a “light, sweet oolong with sweet, fruity notes.” I have tasted oolongs that fit that description, but unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. The flavor was more bitter than sweet and quite astringent, with a bittersweet finish that was fragrant but not flavorful.

A third infusion of 40 seconds produced a very fragrant, but bitter cup. No hint of sweet or fruity. I was done.

This oolong is long on fragrance, but comes up short on flavor. The lack of balance and complexity, and the strong bitterness really put me off. Can’t recommend this one.
