Serendipitea's Gaucho contains a blend of the usual suspects from the world of Masala blends, namely Cloves, Cardamom, and ginger, as well as the wonderfully woody herb Yerba Mate. I've described and re-described Yerba Mate in several posts over the years so I'll spare you yet another romp with my dull professor impersonation and get to the point. Sufficed to say I'm a fan, Matteine is in fact a silly trade name for Caffeine (unless an actual chemist proves me wrong), and I am still sans Gourd and Bombilla (I really need to stop blowing my tea ware funds on silly hats). The latter of the three is the real shame, as I still haven't experienced the odd joy of sipping away as my drink becomes stronger and stronger, like an evil tropical themed villain in his jungle lair....

Brewing this up the Mate and herbal aromas were rich and bountiful, the liqueur was a light tan with hints of green, and the tiny leaf fragments that worked their way through my strainer were actually kind of attractive. The truth is in the sip however, and this truth was a little lacking. I wouldn't say this was a bad cup, there was quite a bit of warmth from the Ginger and the Cardamom, but the Mate just seemed a little, well, hollow. I loved the blend, it just seems odd that the key player would take such a backseat in the brew. If all you want is something warm and slightly spicy to sip on you could do much, much worse, but if your looking for yerba mate itself I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
