serendipteaselimbongestate2ndflushGrown at altitudes up to 6000 feet in the Mirk Valley on Indo-Nepal border, this second flush tea from Selimbong Estate was awarded the prestigious Tea Board of India Award for Quality.

The medium length, twisted black leaves had a faint, floral fragrance. I steeped a level teaspoon in 6 oz of 195F water for four minutes and poured it into a glass mug. The color was coppery brown, and it had a pronounced flowery aroma with notes of lemon balm. The sip, however, was weaker than I’d expected, even though I’d gone a minute longer than the three minute recommendation. It was nicely astringent, with strong lemony notes, with a long finish that was fragrant, lasting, and dry, with muscatel notes. The flavor did develop a little more as it cooled, bringing out more lemon notes, and the finish remained strong and invigorating.

I have mixed feelings about this tea. While I was disappointed in the initial sip, the strong finish really impressed me. While it is more subtle than some Darjeelings I’ve had, it has its good points, including a very reasonable price point.
