What would fall be without pumpkin? Probably not anywhere as delicious as it is with pumpkin! Culinary Teas is one of the many tea vendors that offers seasonal fall/winter teas, with Pumpkin Spice black tea being included in their seasonal lineup. The website is rather vague as to the ingredients of this tea other than to say that it is made of 'all natural flavorings'. By looking at the tea, I can tell that is consists of a long and wiry black tea (perhaps a Ceylon), flower petals, some pieces of dried fruit (that I can assume are pumpkin), and some pieces of what I am assuming are cinnamon and cloves. I would really recommend that Culinary Teas upgrade their website by adding more in-depth information, including the ingredients, about they teas they offer.
When I prepared this tea, I noticed two things. First, the pumpkin flavor is very much present. The tea has a sweet flavor not all that different from pumpkin pie. The spiciness is not overwhelming and complements, rather than overpowers, the pumpkin flavor. The second thing I noticed was that the tea was a little thin in the body. This surprised me considering that I added a decent amount of leaves for the volume of water I was using. The result was a watery-tasting tea, although that is something that can be easily remedied by using more tea leaves in future brewings...and this is something I would recommend.
This tea turned out to be very enjoyable, more so than I expected based on my previous experiences with other pumpkin teas. This is an ideal autumn and fall tea, and also an ideal dessert tea. Milk and sugar are not necessary, but either or both could be added to enhance the dessert quality of this tea. I personally wouldn't see myself drinking this tea out of season, but for those that live in colder areas, this could be a decent year-round tea.
