Having traveled around South America recently, I was excited to see Stash Tea unveil its new Guayusa herbal tea range. Although  I never had the chance to visit Eduador, where the herb is grown, I was excited to discover and taste so many herbal teas unique to this part of the world.

According to Stash Tea, Guayusa is a naturally caffeinated herbal tea native to the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador. In fact, it is the Amazonian cousin of Yerba Mate and both originate from caffeinated rainforest holly trees. But in regards to taste and preparation, here's where the similarities end. To prepare the Pure Guayusa, I'm instructed to use 1 teaspoon of leaves to 8 ounces of boiling water. While steeping the leaves for five minutes, I take in the fresh earthy aroma of its small jade green leaves, a smell that brings back memories of the rich, wet soil found in many South American jungles. Its leaves yield a deep golden liquor with a smooth, well-rounded flavor. Yes, it's earthy as promised and I can only liken the taste notes to a sweet potato or similar root vegetable which grows in rich soil. And even after steeping a bit longer, there is no bitterness. It is simply one of the smoothest herbal teas I've tasted.

Not being a big fan of Yerba Mate's intense flavor, I can't thank Stash Tea enough for selling Guayusa. It has the same antioxidant benefits and energizing effects as Yerba Mate but it releases caffeine much more slowly into the body. Normally I'm quite sensative to caffeine, but even during my second cup, I'm not shaking with jitters!  The purchase of Stash Tea Pure Guayusa or any Guayusa blend also supports small farmers in Ecuador so no matter how you look at it, it's definitely a drink that goes down well!
