This is my first exposure to the Ontario-based outfit known as Tao Tea Leaf. I received a few different Tao Tea Leaf teas to sample, but I decided to go for the Keeemun first, since it was an early morning and Keemuns rarely disappoint in that respect. The Tao Tea Leaf website gives some brief information about the origin and history of this tea. The tea leaves are very small, skinny, and darkly colored. This is exactly what I expect of a good Keemun. The dry leaves have a robust aroma consisting of smoky/roasted, cocoa, and fruity notes. I brewed the tea in boiling water for three minutes. The infusion was a rich coppery brown color. The flavor was strong and hearty, with the expected Keemun punch, but also the strength did not cross the line into being heavy. The tea's complex flavor maintained a brisk quality. The flavor was a little bit roasty, but primarily sweet in a fruity-caramel-cocoa sort of way. This is a sturdy black tea that I would drink again and would recommend to others. Because it is robust, it works well as a morning tea, and also takes milk and/or sugar rather well. I sampled my first cup of this tea black and then added a little agave nectar and a splash of milk to my second cup. Both were delicious in their own right, so it's just a matter of personal preferences. For a more standard morning brew, I recomment the straight black version. The addition of milk and sweetener makes for a more indulgent experience. In all, my first experience with Tao Tea Leaf was positive, and I very much enjoyed their Keemun Gongfu. I look forward to sampling other teas from this company.
