cantonkeemunhaoyaKeemun is a tea that I actively seek out when I see it offered.  Both my husband and I really enjoy trying as many Keemuns as possible to experience the sometimes subtle and sometimes not so subtle differences between the many varieties.  Keemun Hao Ya is the highest grade of Keemun, made with small buds and known for its depth of color and flavor and is sometimes broken down further into Grade A or Grade B, with Grade A being the higher grade.  This particular Keemun, however, was not assigned an additional letter grade.  I requested this tea as an additional sample after perusing the Canton Tea Co. website and ordering their Gold Award Tea Taster Pack.  They very generously obliged and shipped me a few additional samples as well.

Visually, this tea was very beautiful, consisting of small, wiry black leaves with bright golden tips.  The scent was slightly smoky, with a faint and welcoming sweetness.  To prepare my cup I used one level teaspoon in boiling water with a three-minute steep.  The tea brewed up to a deep rust color with a clear smoky scent.

This tea presented a very robust cup, yet remained smooth.  A pleasant fruitiness, sweet and plum-like, lingered well after each sip.  A clear yet light smokiness was also present and combined with the sweet, fruity flavors to create a deep and intoxicating drink.  This tea offers a little bit of everything.  It is smooth, yet sturdy enough to work as a morning brew. It drinks amazingly easy while offering up a wide range of complex flavors.  I was very impressed with this tea and I’m looking forward to checking out my additional samples from Canton Tea Co.
