I have been drinking more and more Yerba Mate recently and this offering from SerendipiTEA caught my eye.  The mates I have tried have all had a similar roasted taste that reminded me of tobacco so my interest was piqued when I saw that this variety contained a handful of spices.  I thought these spices might add an interesting touch to the regular flavors I associate with the drink.

The ingredients are listed as Yerba Mate, cloves, cardamom, and ginger, and each is clearly recognizable.  Cinnamon is not listed, but an inspection of the sample reveled small, reddish, bark-like fragments.  After tasting one, I could swear that cinnamon is in there as well.  The scent of the dry ingredients is very inviting, warm and spicy.  It isn’t overpowering though and the blend seems to have a nice balance of spice and mate.  To prepare my cup I used one very generous teaspoon in water brought to a boil and allowed to cool.  Steeping times were not provided as the instructions just mentioned to steep to taste.  I decided to go with five minutes.

The resulting cup was a very murky yellow and carried only a faint scent of spice.  After a taste, the spice remained very muted in the cup.  Unfortunately this reminded me of a very weak chai version of yerba mate while I was hoping for a more pronounced spiciness.  Although the cup wasn’t bad, and it was pleasant enough to sip, this mate is not something I would seek out on a regular basis.  That being said, for those who enjoy mate, this may be a nice change of pace.
