kteaslogoDuring my time with Teaviews, I have had the opportunity to sample a wide array of chai.  I had always assumed that I truly preferred to have the tea shine in the forefront, but recently, to my surprise, I have decided that I actually enjoy the flavor of the spice just a bit more.  Now when I think of chai, I look toward the heavy spice notes that nearly (but not quite) drown out the tea.  For me, KTeas South Indian Chai is the type of chai that lets the tea shine.

The dry leaves resembled very small, brownish pellets.  A splash of tans and russets are mixed in from the similarly colored spices, which are also presented in small, broken form. The scent of the tea is heavy with cinnamon, although the chai also contains cardamom, ginger, cloves, and pepper.  To prepare my cup I used one heaping teaspoon in boiling water with a five-minute steep.  This produced a deep, rusty brew with the heavy scent of cinnamon.  As with all chai, I prefer to add some form of dairy and sweetener, so I added a touch of honey and a bit of half and half to my cup.

The scent remained heavy on the cinnamon, but the first sip was surprisingly strong with black tea, with the spices filling in neatly behind.  Other than the cinnamon I wasn’t able to clearly identify each individual spice.  Overall I felt the spice blend was a tad bit muddled.  This tea however, presented a nice and easy drinking cup, perfect for chilly winter day.  I don’t want to suggest this tea is weak in any way, as the spices definitely make themselves known.  With this particular tea, it’s a case of having more tea in your cup and less spice.  If you enjoy tea over spice, this one is for you.
