tipuschaitealogoI was very excited to try Tipu’s chai concentrate and, to be honest, I was hoping for perfection in a bottle.  I had the opportunity to sample two other forms of Tipu’s Chai (the original chai slow brew and the instant chai), and although delicious, they came up just a tiny bit short for me.  I was hoping the third time would be a charm.

The liquid concentrate is available in either a 32-ounce bottle (six cups) or a 64-ounce bottle (12 cups).  Ingredients include filtered water, organic evaporated cane juice, ground whole ginger, black tea, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, allspice, nutmeg, mint, and black pepper.  The ingredients sounded delicious and the only one that worried me slightly was the addition of evaporated cane juice as a sweetener.  Having a very low threshold for overly sweetened teas, I hoped this addition wouldn’t upset the balance.

Preparation of this tea could not be any easier.  Instructions included using a two to one ratio; two parts chai concentrate to one part milk.  If desired one could also use a one to one ratio which would produce a less intense cup.  I’m all about strong chai, so I decided to go with one cup chai mix to a half cup 2% milk.  I poured the desired amount in a small pot and brought it to a bubbling simmer over the stove.  The scent was very spicy and rich.  Due to the inclusion of cane juice, I did not add any additional sweetener.  The drink went straight from the stove into a mug, ready to drink.

As masala chai goes, this cup had plenty of kick.  The predominant flavor was ginger, but it was balanced with a hefty amount of cinnamon.  The spiciness of the chai was wonderful. Although the flavors of the chai were great, the addition of the cane juice added a tad too much sweetness for my taste.  However, I think for most people the level of sweetness in this blend would not be a problem.  In fact, my husband loved the concentrate and thought it was balanced nicely. Overall I would say this was a great cup of chai and I would recommend giving it a try.
