For a tea-loving sweet-tooth such as myself, tea-based confections are the ultimate treat. I recently was fortunate enough to acquire a wonderful array of sweets from American Tea Room. The items were various petit fours, tea cakes, and a piece of dark chocolate, each made exclusively for ATR by Valerie Confections, and each prepared using ATR teas. Specifically, I sampled a matcha petit four, a lavender Earl Grey petit four, a lavendar Earl Gray tea cake, and an Extreme Vanilla tea cake, and a dark chocolate enrobed with Apricots and made with ATR's Tangier tea. For starters, I should say that these confections are so professionally prepared, that they almost look too good to eat. Each of the petit fours/tea cakes provides at least two or three decent bites. I decided to cut a small piece from each confection and give them all a sample together so I could compare amongst all of them. The first one I tried was the matcha petit four. This one is green, but not intensely green, and the flavor is sweet and true to the matcha taste. The Extreme Vanilla tea cake was next, and while this was certainly a tasty little bite, it was the sample that was the least "tea-ish" (meaning that if I had not known that tea was involved, I never would have guessed). The Earl Grey petit four and Earl Grey tea cake each took me by surprise (as I am not typically a big fan of Earl Grey and was not super excited about seeing this tea show up in two of the confections) and I must say that these were each delicious. The Earl Grey flavor was readily detectable in each, but blended nicely with the cake flavors, providing a toned-down bergamot flavor which could be appreciated by Earl Grey lovers as well as those that don't traditionally go for this distinct flavor. The final confection, and my personal favorite, was the Chocolate Tea Bark. I don't even know where to start with this one other than to say it is pretty close to divine. The chocolate is rich and dark, just the way I like it. The flavor of the chocolate itself rivals just about any other dark chocolate I have had. Pieces of apricot are worked into the chocolate, and the Tangier Tea adds a wonderful nuance to the flavor. This tea bark is a rich and decadent treat, and one I would highly recommend. Upon sampling a small piece of each of these treats, my sugar and tea intake requirements had been met and I was quite satisfied with the experience. These little confections are not only unique, but clearly of the highest quality available. These items would make a wonderful gift for the tea lover in your life, especially if that tea lover in your life happens to be you.
