White August Tea Company is an online tea retailer base in Arizona that offers a wide array of tea, books, and tea accessories.  This is my first experience with the company and based on this sample, I hope I have the opportunity to try more of their teas and wares.

Rouge Wave is a tasty combination of Japanese sencha, toasted coconut, and ginger.  The tea itself isn’t much to look at as the sencha has been broken into tiny fragments, but the red and yellow flower petals that have been added to the blend contribute a mix of colors that is actually quite pretty.  The scent is appealing, with a nice aroma of toasted coconut and just a hint of ginger.  General brewing recommendations were available on the website and I used one heaping teaspoon with 175-degree water and a two minute steep.  White August Tea Company suggests anywhere from a three to five minute infusion time for greens, but I decided to shorten the time and give that a try.  In my experience, sencha can be finicky and turn bitter with a longer steep.

The culmination of my efforts produced a delectable and comforting cup.  To my surprise, the ginger was a major component.  It wasn’t overpowering or out of balance, but it was more prominent than I expected.  For me, this was not a problem since I absolutely love ginger.  The coconut was also clearly present and deliciously toasty.  The two ingredients combined to create a drink reminiscent of a gingerbread cookie.  This was a nice change of pace from either a typical coconut or ginger flavored tea.  Although I have had these two ingredients in teas before, this particular blend presented a bold cup and I highly recommend it to fans of ginger.
