necessiteas-lemon-raspberry.jpgWhen I noticed this sample, my thoughts immediately drifted to raspberry lemonade.  I absolutely love lemonade during the spring and summer months and figured this would be a great one to try.  The NecessiTeas Lemon Raspberry is a mixture of sencha, lemongrass, lemon peel, raspberries, and natural flavor.  After looking over the sample bag, the lemon components were the most prominent, with clear fragments of the lemongrass and large chunks of lemon peel.  The raspberries were comprised of small pieces rather than whole berries, and seemed to me to be a bit lacking in the overall mix.

The scent of the dry mix was, not surprisingly, lead by lemon.  There was a definite sweetness to the smell and after my first whiff I couldn’t help but think of Sweet Tart candies.  I prepared my cup using the recommendations provided on the bag with one heaping teaspoon in below boiling water (I went with 185 degrees) and a three minute steep.  The tea steeped to a bright gold that carried a heavy lemon scent.  The sweetness I detected in the dry mix disappeared altogether.

I fully expected my first taste to be overpowered by the lemon and completely lacking in the berry department.  While the lemon aspects were powerful, the berries were noticeable and I’m guessing this is where the natural flavors come in.  If I could tweak the blend to my personal tastes, I would take out a little of the lemon and add in a bit more raspberry.  Another concern put to rest by this blend was the terrible Pine Sol or cleaner taste that many lemon/lime teas struggle to overcome.  Happily, I can say this tea steers well away from those unfortunate notes.  Overall, this was a nice cup of tea and if you’re a fan of strong lemon flavors, it will not disappoint.
