This Darjeeling offering is an "autumn special" flush from the Goomtee estate. The dry leaves are primarily dark brownish-black in color, although there is a generous peppering of green and tan specks throughout. The dry leaves are mostly thin and wiry and offer a rich aroma that hints at tobacco, woods, and spices. I prepared this tea using 190-degree water and a three-minute infusion. The tea brews to a darker amber-brown color, making it very clear that this is no first flush Darjeeling. What struck me most, even after only one sip of this tea, were the depth and complexity of flavor of this tea. There are so many different notes coming into play, and this tea will surely delight the taste buds. I picked up on spicy, woodsy, vegetal, caramel, nutty and vanilla notes. This is a sturdy brew that lingers in the mouth, with no real sense of astrigency or other unpleasant attributes. The Darjeeling TeaXpress website makes several references to the bitterness and astingency of this tea, but I personally found it smooth and not the least bit bitter. I would not hesitate to recommend this tea. The complex flavor profile is well developed and is sure to appeal to any Darjeeling lover.
