This was not my first sample from Red Leaf Tea, but it was my first time trying their matcha.  If you haven’t visited the website and you’re a matcha fan, definitely give it a look.  With flavors ranging from goji berry to alfalfa, there is likely a matcha perfect for anyone’s personal tastes.  For my first sample, I decided to try the Blueberry Matcha.  I love blueberries and the idea of combining fruit with green tea has always appealed to me.

The matcha used for this combination is ceremonial grade and organic, free of artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and chemical additives.  When I opened the package, I was greeted with a deep green powder, not the vibrant green I was used to seeing.  I reviewed suggestions for preparation and made small adjustments to suit my personal tastes.  The website recommended using 1.5 to 2 rounded teaspoons, which seemed very high to me.  Instead I used one teaspoon for my 4-ounce cup.  For water, I set my kettle to boil, poured the boiling water into my cold cup and then poured the cup into my matcha bowl.  This method cools the water to a nice temperature and I have had good luck preparing matcha this way.

After a vigorous whisking, I was greeted with a frothy, forest green cup.  Again, the color was not the typical vibrant green I associate with this drink.  I tried a few sips and waited for the blueberry to come through.  I found the berry to be extremely muted and only noticeable if I really concentrated.  However, once the drink had time to cool the blueberry became more noticeable and each sip finished with a refreshingly light sweetness.  The base matcha was also quite tasty. It wasn’t overtly heavy and was just a tad grassy.  Overall, this was a very nice flavored matcha, but I wouldn’t mind having a little more berry flavor.
