While many of White August Tea Company's tea names leave me wondering what in the universe the leaf is (e.g. Rogue Wave is about as unclarifying as you can get), Silver Threads is close enough to the tea's more common moniker, I can guess what it is immediately. It is, in fact, Bai Hao Yin Zhen, the famed Silver Needles. The leaves are on the smaller and barer side of Silver Needles, lacking much of the soft downiness typical to this type of tea, but I love the beautiful shades of silver, brown, and green that make up the leaves.

I steep at 180° for three minutes and get an extremely pale yellow liquor. It smells faintly milky and grassy. It is somewhat hay-like and smooth. Very smooth. It has a pleasant sweetness, no bitterness, and no astringency. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't have any negative aspects.

That being said, I don't feel that this leaf has any stand-out positive characteristics, either. It doesn't have a lot of a depth or impact. I realise that Silver Needle is a subtle leaf, but you can have complexity while remaining subdued and calming. It's a good leaf for the style of brewing where you leave the leaf in the water, never removing it, only adding more water when you want more steeps. If I was ordering from White August Tea Company and out of Silver Needle, I might get this. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't go out of my way.
