Red Leaf Tea's Chocolate Matcha tea was one of several samples I received from Red Leaf Tea's new matcha variety line. This was the one sample that had me the most interested and excited, so I held off on this one until I had a (relatively) quiet moment in which I could really enjoy this tea. The tea is described as a mixture of organic matcha and cocoa powder. The blend is a dull mossy color, very similar in color to the other matcha varieties from Red Leaf Tea. Compared to matcha offerings I have sampled from other companies, the color seems a little dull and not as vibrant as it could be, but in this case I am not sure if perhaps the presence of the cocoa powder is the reason for the drab color. When I sniffed the tea, I was a little disappointed to observe that I could hardly smell much in the way of chocolate; the aroma was mostly that of matcha with the characteristic green sweetness. I used heated, but not boiling, water and commenced a vigorous whisking, yet was unable to produce much in the way of a respectable froth. Although I had been most excited about this matcha variety than any of the other new Red Leaf offerings, I ended up finding that this tea actually had the least exciting flavor compared to the others I had already sampled. To be honest, I could hardly taste any chocolate flavor whatsoever. If I had sampled this tea in a truly blind taste-testing, chances are that I would have assumed this to be a standard, unflavored matcha tea. The lack of a real chocolate contribution was the biggest strike against this tea, but the fact that the matcha base was decent at best and nothing over-the-top spectacular, makes this even less likely to be a tea I would highly recommend to others. The matcha was bland and weak, with no real sense of freshness or sweetness. While other Red Leaf flavored matchas have provided interesting matcha experiences, this one just failed to impress me.
