California Tea House's Apricot Chai is a unique blend that consists of full-leaf black tea, apricot and peach preserves, vanilla bean bits, ginger, whole cloves, and citrus peels. This is quite the concoction, and I really didn't know what to expect from this combination of ingredients. The scent of the dry leaves is heavy on the peaches and apricot, with a less noticeable ginger note. I prepared this tea by infusing the leaves for three minutes in boiling water. Because this is marketed as a chai tea, I decided to mix in a bit of milk and sugar for the complete chai experience. I ended up being very surprised by the flavor. With the name of chai, I expected a heavy spice load. But this tea lacks cinnamon and cardamom, two common ingredients of chai, so only the ginger and cloves carry the chai-like flavors. However, the ginger and cloves are, surprisingly, far outpowered by the apricot and peach notes. I was actually amazed at how potent the apricot and peach flavors came through and how successfully they overpowered two spices that are otherwise pretty strong in their own right. The sweetness of the apricots and peaches lingers long after the sip is swallowed, and I would argue that the natural sweetness precludes the need to add any additional sugar. The vanilla and citrus contributions were the weakest of the ingredients, although while I couldn't really detect their individual contributions, I imagine they did contribute to the overall smoothness of the tea. In all, this wasn't a bad blend by any measure, although I do think the tea might be more appropriately named "apricot spice" or something else other than "apricot chai", as I really don't think the tea delivers the spicy chai flavors that one typically expects from a tea with chai in the name. This tea is more about the fruit and the fruity sweetness than it is about chai spiciness. In all, though, it is still a good brew and would be a good choice for a dessert tea.
