This is an eclectic and supposedly funcitonal blend or red rooibos, honeybush, valerian root (now with a new and improved recipe that doubles the amount of valerian root as previously usd), cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, and toasted rice. The functionality of this tea comes from primarily the valerian root, although perhaps also from the chamomile, which aids in sleep. The tea has a sweet aroma that hints at spice, fruits, and a creaminess that is not too far off from eggnog. I have to be honest that there was some component of this aroma that I found rather off-putting and just seemed to stick out from everything else, but I am unable to identify the exact ingredient or igredients responsible for the offensive aroma.
I used boiling water and steeped the tea for five minutes. The tea tastes like a mild rooibos chai but with some definite additional flavor notes present. There was a sweet fruitiness that came through and every now and then I detected a creamy/sustard element. The spiciness of this tea is not really comparable to true chai teas, as this is much subdued and not that intense in the spice category. In terms of flavor alone, this tea was just above mediocre in my opinion. There was alot going on with the different flavors and I don't think the various components came together seamlessly. However, I will note that I drank this tea in the morning, and as far as functionality goes, this tea made me sleepy for several hours. So if you are looking for a tea to help you fall asleep, this blend, with its heavy dose of Valerian root, will do the trick. The flavor is decent, but I wouldn recommend this tea based on its functional properties much more than its flavor profile.
