This is my first black tea matcha, which means I don't have anything to compare it to. So in all honesty, I can't tell you how quality it is compared to other black tea matchas, but I can tell you how much I enjoyed it, which is quite. I quite enjoyed this strange experience. As with Red Leaf Tea's other matchas, this is labelled as organic. Normally I care very little about this, but it's nice for a tea where you consume the entire leaf.

The powder is a deep dusty brown dirt colour. It smells subdued but delicious. I decided to try a normal matcha prep, with a little higher temperature, so I sifted a level teaspoon into a preheated chawan then added 4 ounces of 170° water.

It whisks up surprisingly well, and the foam sticks around for a respectable amount of time. After the bubbles dissipate, the tea is gritty, but until then, it's smoother than I would have expected.

It has a very floral scent and flavour, as well as a rich, robust scent. The flavour reminds me of a Keemun - Rich, smoky, and very intense while remaining surprisingly smooth. It's somewhat bitter and strongly fruity with notes of malt, dirt, and flowers. It's a very unique tea and a nice change of pace from your basic green tea matcha. Sure, the only way it resembles normal matcha is that they're both ground teas, and that's where the similarities end. But if you like milled tea, and are tiring of the green stuff, you should definitely give this a go.
