With the dog days of summer in full swing here in south Florida, I happily offered to sample some of White August's special iced tea blends, including today's treat, Emerald Ice. This is a blend of green tea with ginger, jasmine, and tropical fruits. I do wish a little more detail was given as to the ingredients list so I knew exactly which fruits were involved. I prepared this tea as if I was making a cup of hot green tea, infusing one teaspoon of leaves per cup in 185-degree water for three minutes. I then let the tea sit at room temperature for about an hour before tossing it in the fridge for the afternoon. After work, I treated myself to the iced concoction. My first impression was "yum". This is a sweet green tea, but not overly sweet. The ginger and jasmine were not as pronounced as I imagined they would be, and while they clearly take a back seat to the tropical fruit flavors, they do keep the overall fruitiness and sweetness in check. The jasmine in particular keeps the tea crisp and refreshing in a way that I really appreciated. I find it hard to describe the overall flavor of this tea, but I'll give it my best shot at this: imagine mixing a mellow and sweet green tea with apple juice, then adding just a hint of jasmine. If this description sounds unappealing to you, then I have failed to properly describe this tea, as the truth is that it is delicious and entirely addicting. At the completion of each sip, I find myself wanting more and wishing my sample was larger so that I could brew a second batch of this deliciousness. I see myself ordering a stash of this in the near future!
