The BOH website is remarkably succint in providing information on this particular product, called Palas afternoon. The description says simply "a light and delicate full leaf tea". The dry leaves arevery long in length, and are mostly straight in shape although an occasional leaf demonstrates a loose curliness. The leaves are a dark chocolately brown color with intermittent lighter hues popping up. The dry leaves are very fragrant, with a nice spiciness leading the way. Given the name and descrption of this tea, I was, reasonably, expecting a rather light-bodied brew. But I found that this tea had more oomph than I was expecting, although I should clarify that it was, relatively speaking, less full-bodied than teas designated as breakfast teas. I prepared the tea using boiling water and a three minute infusion. What struck me most about this tea, from my very first sip, was the flavor element that bears an uncanny resemblance to artichokes. Yes, you read that correctly: artichokes. I did a double-take after my first sip, and, yes, it turns out that how I can best describe this tea is to say that it has a strong artichoke flavor. Now I love artichokes, so that last statement is intended to be a compliment. Overall, the flavor is light-bodied and underneat the artichoke flavor is a more subtle and easy-drinking sweet flavor profile. This is certainly a unique flavor profile and I am not sure I have experienced much like it before, especially for a black tea (versus a more vegetal green tea). I personally enjoyed this tea, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a truly unique black tea.
