When I noticed this sample, I was intrigued.  In my mind, matcha instantly equates to green tea and seeing an Oolong Matcha sent me for a loop.  I was excited to try it since all my other matcha experiences have been with the green variety.  As a side, this is not the only non-green matcha available, as Red Leaf Tea offers an amazing selection that also includes white, black, and pu-erh matchas.

To prepare my cup, I set my kettle to a boil and added the water to my waiting teacup.  I then added one level teaspoon of the Oolong Matcha and transferred the water to my chawan.  I was surprised by the color of the matcha.  I was expecting a modest brown, but instead was greeted with a dark, moss-colored green.  The scent was light and carried a nice toasted quality.  When I added the water and started to whisk, the liquor turned to a deep and murky green, reminding me of a heavy pea soup.  I was able to create a decent froth, but as with the other Red Leaf matcha samples, it wasn’t an easy process and the fruits of my labor disappeared quickly.

I transferred the contents back to my teacup and while I can’t say the appearance was the most attractive, the taste was delicious.  The flavor was very robust and presented the fine roasted qualities of a nice oolong.  The tea had a certain smooth quality about it yet retained a bold character.  I really enjoyed this tea and I look forward to trying the remaining non-green varieties.  Of all the Red Leaf Tea matcha samples, this is my personal favorite so far.

    lol! Why on earth would you prepare matcha in a chawan then transfer it to a teacup? Use one or the other (preferably the chawan), but not both. No wonder you lost the froth so quickly.
