As with a few other of Red Leaf Tea's matchas, this is my first white tea matcha, so I have absolutely nothing to compare it to. I start out a bit wary because when I open the package, I notice that the tea is a muddy brown colour. But it's a white tea. So that's weird.

I prep it like a normal green matcha: Sift a teaspoon into a preheated chawan, pour in some 160° water, whisk. As with their other matchas, this whisks surprisingly well, frothing up easily and quickly with beautiful bubbles galore. The muddy brown powder has turned into a muddy brown liquid with a bright, tangy, floral scent.

The flavour is nothing short of brilliant. It's bright and vibrant with an interesting fruity, berry-like aftertaste, though it leaves the mouth a bit dry. The floral aroma has translated beautifully to the taste, becoming the dominant flavour. It has a slightly earthy taste, with notes of nuts and oak. It's incredibly smooth and interesting. It has good depth, texture, flavour. It's among the best matchas I have tried, including the classic green tea matchas, but more impressively, it's among the best teas I have tried. It's a white tea at heart, but with all the complexities of white teas emphasized exponentially to create an entirely new experience.

Another bonus, and something I don't say often, is that the price point is fantastic. It costs the same as mid-grade green tea matchas, which is reasonable considering how unique it is. Downsides: The dry finish leaves me wanting to ruin the experience by drinking another cup of tea to sate my thirst. It's also not for everyone. I excitedly had my husband try it, and while matchas in general are admittedly not his favourite type of tea, he hated it. Buying a tin of it is a pretty big commitment, but if you enjoy ground teas, white teas, or unique experiences, you probably won't regret giving this a try.
