This product is part of a wide range of organic tisanes, each providing it's own specific medicinal benefit. Combining organic lemon balm and passion flower, this particular brew is designed to encourage relaxation. Each tea bag is individually wrapped in a plastic envelope. Although not the most environmentally friendly practice, it does mean the contents stay very fresh. Indeed, the faintly citrusy, herbaceous scent of lemon balm greets me as I open the wrapper. Bagged in a traditional paper sachet, it's hard to see much of the ingredients, other than they seem to be ground to a fine, herbal-looking powder.

HELPS conveniently provides the list of ingredients and the brewing instructions on the wrapper. After steeping the tea bag for 5 minutes in 8 ounces of boiling water, the cup bears a shade of brownish gold typical of so many herbal teas. Again, the scent and the flavour are all lemon balm. I can just pick out the passion flower if I try really hard. It's sweet, papaya-like lift peeks out during the finish. I don't mind the grassy flavour of lemon balm per se but the overall effect is rather plain. I found this to be the case with another of HELPS' lemon balm-centred blend. There just isn't enough zing to this cup to really hold my interest.

While it's drinkable, some rethinking of the formulation of this blend should be in order. A bit more passion flower in the mix would make for a less plain, strictly herbaceous cup. While I can use a little help getting to sleep every once in a while – mostly when I've drank too much black tea, I'm not sure I would reach for this particular blend. I feel that there are other, more flavourful blends out there that could do the trick. Then again, this product is convenient, very affordable and organic... When viewed more as a medicinal aid than something to drink for pleasure, this tisane begins to make a bit more sense as a purchase.
