As an Irishwoman, I feel  a bit sneaky imbibing in Scottish Breakfast tea. We Celtic descendants are prideful to a fault about our differences and distinctness.  I'm glad I broke protocol, though.  Scottish Breakfast tea is different.  It is distinct.  And, its good!  At Least Culinary Tea's version is.

What's more, the staff ant Culinary Teas (CT) make an extra effort to tell you exactly what the blend should taste like and why. Consider this excerpt about their Scottish Breakfast:

"This tea is like a proper Highlander – robust, malty (not unlike a good Scotch) and full of life and vigor. Highlanders liked their tea very strong and insisted on hints of cask oak to remind them of their clan’s own special elixir – single malt Scotch."

Because I love a bold, strong cuppa, teas made up of broken leaves or fannings, are among my favorite.  Culinary's Scottish Breakfast is, alas, a pouch full tea leaf bits.   Ah, but what delicious little bits they are. The broken pieces unfurl to produce the robust, dark liquid that I associate with real tea.

The smell is astringent and smoky. The taste leans toward smoky and hearty. Men, I think, would really like this tea. Whoever drinks it might take care in brewing it,  however.  Though sturdy and manly enough for steeping in boiling water, it can quickly turn bitter if brewed too long.  I was careful to set my timer for three minutes only.

I would confidently serve this blend with a meal. The bold taste would complement the richest breakfast fare like sausages, biscuits and gravy, even haggis! For us in Arizona, breakfast enchiladas are a favorite morning food. Until now, Earl Grey was the only blend audacious enough to hold its own with such greasy, spicy fare. But Culinary's Scottish Breakfast would suit even better. I give it a 7.6.
