This is my third offering from Mayalsia's BOH Tea. Compared to the presentation of the previous two varieties, this particular offering appears to be of lesser quality. The leaves are broken bits, perhaps just a bit above what you would find in lower-quality teabags. However, given that I was particularly tired this morning and looking for a heavy brew, I figured that smaller leaf size would brew up a stronger beverage. And yes, I was right. The dry leaves are boldly scented, with hints of malt and fruit. I brewed this tea in boiling water for about 2.5 minutes. The tea's dark color serves as a good predictor of the flavor. This is certainly a strong-bodied and robust brew. In retrospect, I should have reduced the infusion time by a minute or so, as the small leaf size seemed to give way to bitterness a bit too easily. Taken straight up, I found this tea to be not that enjoyable. I had to add sugar to make it more acceptable, and still, I would be exaggerating if I said I really loved it. The BOH website describes this as bright and brisk; I do agree with the brisk part of this statement, as I did find it to be a good pick-me-up morning blend. However, I found the heavy nature of the tea to not be in alignment with a "bright" descriptor.
Overall, this is a strong and dark black tea that is probably best suited for morning consumption. With its heavy flavor profile, it takes the addition of things like milk or sugar well, and in my opinion, these extra add-ins are necessary to tone down the robust and flat flavor. I would caution against over-steeping these leaves to avoid a bitter brew.
