After trying a variety of unique ground teas from Red Leaf Tea, I thought it would be nice to sample something a little more common. Yet while their Royal Matcha is undoubtedly less unique than, say, their White Tea Matcha, it's still far from ordinary. I prepare it like I do most matchas: Sift into preheated chawan, add 160° water, whisk.

The tea is unlike most other green tea matcha I've had. It's bright and bitter, bracing but not astringent. It's heavily citrus with a hint of cinnamon. It has a somewhat mineral flavour. It doesn't have the qualities of a really high quality matcha, but it doesn't come across as a low quality one, either.

It has a great deal of character, but surprisingly little resemblance to classic matchas. There's no vegetal taste and very little sweetness. It's not the sort of tea I could see myself drinking every day, but it's unique and definitely worth a try. It's a good matcha for a change of pace without going so far as their non-green tea matchas.
